Schirmer Art Books Presents: The Book of Stars by George Hurrell
Photographs 1927-1990
200 pages, 140 duotone and colour plates
George Hurrell, born in Cincinnati in 1904, is synonymous with Hollywood glamour photography. His portrait gallery, spanning more than six decades, present the megastars of several epochs. It - like its creator - is a singular phenomenon in the history of photography and show business. Hurrell's carer began in 1927 with the opening of a photo studio in Los Angeles. Ramon Navarro was the first Hollywood star he had the opportunity to photograph - in San Marino in 1928. His portrait style, echoing his mentor Edward Steichen, excited both the stars and the hears of the leading film studios. In 1929 he was named MGM's chief portrait photographer. Reclaiming his independence in 1933, Hurrell also worked for other studios.
The selection of photographs for this volume was made by George Hurrell himself, a still very active octogenarian.
